International Workshop on “Decarbonization of Built Environment: Advancements through Digital and Simulation Tools”

On August 28th, 2024, the Sustainable Infrastructure Modeling (SIM) Group, led by Prof. Albert Thomas from IIT Bombay, hosted the International Workshop on "Decarbonization of Built Environment: Advancements through Digital and Simulation Tools." The workshop brought together global experts to discuss the latest innovations in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), digital construction management, and sustainability. Highlights included Dr. Anastasia Globa's presentation on AR/VR applications in architecture, Dr. Olubukola Tokede's insights on the role of LCA in decarbonization, and Dr. Albert Thomas' strategies for achieving net zero emissions. The event also featured hands-on training in LCA software tools, led by Dr. Ann Francis and team, enhancing participants' skills in applying sustainability assessments.
The workshop concluded with a poster presentation session, awards, and a closing ceremony, where Dr. Thomas emphasized ongoing collaboration in the field of sustainable development. The international faculty also engaged with the SIM research group, CTaM faculty, and first-year civil engineering students, sharing insights and discussing potential areas for collaboration and improvement in ongoing projects and educational methodologies.



May - July, 2021
Continuing Education Programme for Rural Housing Engineers

Online refresher cum orientation programme was conducted during May, June and July 2021 for training more than 100 Rural Housing Engineers with the support of State Management Unit Rural Housing, Maharashtra. This programme (5 days online) was designed to give exposure to Basic Civil Engineering and Architectural aspects. 11 IIT Bombay faculty members from 5 academic units and 5 experts from other institutions/organizations delivered the lectures.

GIAN Short Term Course - Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM) Applications in construction

Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) is a program approved by the Govt. of India in Higher Education aimed at tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs internationally to encourage their engagement with the Institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment the country's existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India's scientific and technological capacity to global excellence.
IIT Bombay with help of the Construction Technology & Management Division conducted a workshop on Building Information Modelling (BIM) which is an emerging paradigm in the way the life cycle of construction projects is managed. This course covered the fundamental concepts and philosophies underlying the development of BIM. It gave an hands-on experience of the tools and techniques used in BIM. It also dealt with the different challenges in adopting BIM in construction organizations and how to overcome them. The topics included are

  1. Underlying concepts of BIM including parametric modelling
  2. Interoperability platforms
  3. Performing clash detection
  4. 4D, 5D, nD BIM
  5. Generative design using BIM
  6. Using BIM in planning and scheduling
  7. Using BIM in direct fabrication
  8. Project control using reality capture
  9. BIM in facilities management
  10. BIM Execution Plan
  11. BIM ecosystem etc.
The Main Faculty of the program were The program received a positive response with over 50 participants. Around 8 eminent experts in various dimensions of BIM collaborated together for a span of 2 weeks to set a benchmark to popularise BIM and its tools to promote better management of construction projects of the future.
